Description
The Center of Memphis Folklore was located behind a large card across from the Peabody trolley stop. Most nights local blues musicians took the stage and filled the Center with high-pitched harmonicas and howling guitars. The building was poorly insulated, and in the winter, Herschel had to wear both a sweater and jacket inside tire Center's small, dank offices. It was January, and on his way to work Herschel could see his breath in the air. He made his way behind the Center's stage, dodged the overhanging pipes and took a seat at Iris desk beneath black-and-white posters of Magic Sam, Billy Lee Riley and James Cotton. Recently, Herschel's archiving duties had been supplanted by grant writing, and consequently, tire hours of his workday began to bundle together like unwieldy stacks of paper. He was squaring his files when Marsha, the Center's pugnacious director, approached his desk with a redheaded, goateed man in tow. "Joel," Marsha said, looking up at the redhead, "This is one of our archivists, Herschel Loew. Herschel, this is Joel Schaffer, Associate Director for the Smithsonian."
